Artist in Residence Program

Since 2019, we have hosted an Artist in Residence at the House, Barnsworth Gallery, and outdoor exhibitions to foster the intersectionality of Art and Architecture.

Art has always been an integral part of this site—both Dr. Farnsworth and Lord Palumbo considered themselves patrons of the arts—and the House itself is frequently compared to sculpture. We believe that the true beauty of this program lies in the collaborations that it facilitates. Having artists continue to be inspired by and collaborate with the site is one of the many ways the site’s legacy continues, and we are excited to be partners in this type of creativity.

If you wish to apply to the Artist in Residence program, please submit a proposal to akirakos@savingplaces.org. We will review it and respond within thirty days.

When submitting a proposal, please include:

  • Your motivation for working with EFH
  • Details of your past work, previous exhibitions, experience with other historic houses or sites
  • Sketches, plans, and themes of your proposed artwork
  • Outline your vision of the exhibition, including the number of pieces, whether the pieces will be new, and if so, estimated time to create.
  • Type of programming you would like to organize to support the exhibition and include your willingness to commit to a contract.

Please be aware that due to the program’s popularity and other curatorial obligations, even if we are keenly interested in your work, we might be scheduled out years in advance. Thank you for your interest in the Artist in Residence program at the Edith Farnsworth House!

FAQs:

How long will the exhibition last?

Between 3-9 months, depending on the concepts and the House’s other curatorial commitments.

Is this a traditional residency? Will I be able to stay in the Edith Farnsworth House?

No. Given the site’s historic nature and capabilities, you will not be living on site. However, you will have access to the site and our staff. If you are not local to Chicagoland, you must secure local housing for the installation and de-installation.

Is this a paid residency?

Yes! However, the artist is expected to assist with fundraising for their projects, whether that includes assisting NTHP with grant applications, participating in Zoom presentations to foundations and other prospective donors, or securing support from past clients/patrons/gallerists.

Is there a specific type of art you’re interested in?

There is no limitation on art forms! (Within reason) Painting, sculpture, installations, performances, etc. See our past exhibitions and photo galleries below to get an idea of exhibitions we’ve already done.

Do I need to be represented or managed to apply?

No—all artists can apply. However, if you are or have a special relationship with a gallery, please include that in your proposal.

I’m not sure I want to be an Artist in Residence, but I am still interested in working with the Edith Farnsworth House. Can I still send a proposal?

Yes, we recommend that any artist or curator who wants to work with us send a proposal.
